Recently, my daughter and I spent a relaxing evening listening to music and reading. We were silently enjoying each other’s company and unwinding from a busy few days. After a while, I looked over and caught her smiling. I questioned her reason for the gesture and her response was heartwarming.
“I’m happy……..I have a good book, I’m listening to Christmas music, I’m safe in my home with you, Thanksgiving is next week, I just ate Chinese food, and I have a glass of water. I just feel good.”
Wow. So simple. A glass of water. She was thankful for a glass of water.
How do adults lose sight of these basic incentives for being grateful? Could it be that we all are so busy searching for pleasure and fulfillment that we overlook the plain straightforward gifts that are laid at our feet? It seems as though we spend a lot of time thinking of things we would like to have, and not nearly enough time enjoying the blessings we’ve already been given.
Gratitude encourages joy and contentment, both characteristics that are pleasing to the Lord. So as we come into this week dedicated to being thankful, let’s ponder on ALL we have.
We are thankful for our salvation.
We are thankful for our family and friends.
We are thankful for our homes, this country and our jobs.
We are thankful for all who serve others.
Looking a little deeper-
We are thankful for warm clothes,
food on our tables ,
vehicles to drive,
cell phones to communicate.
And then the things we sometimes miss-
We should be thankful that the server at the restaurant took time to wash his hands after he visited the restroom.
We should be thankful that the people we met with, first thing this morning, brushed their teeth.
We should be thankful that traffic wasn’t so heavy.
We should be thankful for the beautiful fall foliage, for the color of the sky, the warmth of the sun.
We should be thankful for ….......................……………..............……….a glass of water.
