The Old Girl is Still Beautiful

When I went to South Roebuck the other day to take pictures, it brought back a flood of old memories. This picture was taken from the choir loft with a wide angle lens. What is you favorite memory of South Roebuck? I think at one point in time or another we were all members there. My favorite memory is was my wedding (I have to put that or face deportation)!

Rights of Passage

We all have them. "Rights of passage", little events that move you from childhood through your teens and then on to be adults. The first time you can walk across the street without holding your mother's hand, or your parents leave you alone with no sitter, your first solo drive and of course, the first time you awake and look out the window to find your trees and grass covered with toilet paper. You have been rolled. Remember the feeling of excitement? "Awww, someone rolled me". Fun stuff. The bad news is that it rained after the rolling and now the yard is full of wet slimy tissue. Time to clean up Neen.

Our little girl is growing up. :)

(How awful to lose most of your roll to the arms of a tree. What a waste.)

A Wild and Crazy Crew

There is never a lack of entertainment when this group is together. We gather to celebrate important milestones such as birthdays, graduations, holidays and sometimes, just because. There are food favorites; like Eddie’s famous fajitas or Nee Naw’s chicken and dressing. Homemade ice cream in the summer and sausage balls during the Christmas holidays. The conversation is never limited to “tasteful” topics but can include an array of subject matter as mundane as discussing one’s current list of medications to things bizarre and too embarrassing to mention.

This assembly normally consists of two grandparents, and uncle and aunt, my husband and me, and four of our five children, their three spouses and the baby of the group, our granddaughter. When building our modest home, we were excited to, for the first time ever, have an official dining room. The search for a dining table was extensive but finally I found a table that easily could be mistaken as an aircraft carrier. It is very, very long and when it was purchased, I was confident that it would allow the complete family to enjoy a meal together for many years to come. I was wrong. This past weekend when we celebrated my son’s residency match and my newest daughter-in-law’s birthday, we had to squeeze together like sardines. Our elbows hit each other and if someone dropped their napkin then they would just have to use a sleeve because no one could move to pick it up. It was tight but so comfortable. We wouldn’t have it any other way. We love being together.

We are a unique group. Sometimes that is good and sometimes it is a challenge. God has truly blessed us with each other. We have had some dreadfully difficult times that without each other and God’s love and strength, well, I just don’t know how we would have made it. Thank you God for this precious crazy family! God is good- All the time!!
